What is Participatory Mapping and Participatory Geographical Information Systems?

Participatory mapping and Public Participatory Geographical Information Systems are incorporating public, community or stakeholder participation in the cartographic process. There are varying techniques of mapping as well as the degree to which there is involvement. The process involves the public identifying, plotting points or drawing on the maps.

A variety of methods can be employed be it ground mapping (pg 13), using scaled maps or images (pg 14), participatory 3D models (P3DM, Pg 15), Geographic Information Systems (GIS, pg 17) and Multimedia & Internet- based mapping (Pg 17)

Uses:

In my research so far, participatory mapping is growing in popularity and the thematic applications are becoming more diverse. Thus far projects mostly focus around:

  • social,
  •  communal,
  • development,
  • environmental,
  • planning,
  • advocacy,
  • resource management,
  • spatial knowledge,
  • historical and cultural,
  • disaster, hazards & risks
  • etc.

Other Participatory Approaches:

  • Participatory Rural Appraisal,
  • Appreciative Inquiry,
  • Participatory Technology Development,
  • Participatory Learning and Action,
  • PGIS and Participatory Mapping.
